Bunch shaping in electron linear accelerators

نویسندگان

چکیده

Modern electron linear accelerators are often designed to produce smooth bunch distributions characterized by their macroscopic ensemble-average moments. However, an increasing number of accelerator applications call for finer control over the beam distribution, e.g., requiring specific shapes its projection along one coordinate. Ultimately, distribution at single-particle level could enable new opportunities in science. This review discusses recent progress toward controlling on "mesoscopic" scale with emphasis shaping or introducing complex correlations required some applications. emphasizes experimental and theoretical developments electron-bunch methods based bounded external electromagnetic fields via interactions self-generated velocity radiation fields.

New Applications for Linear Electron Accelerators*

Electron linacs in the 100 MeV to 25 GeV energy range have by now been in operation for periods ranging from one year to over 20 years. In 1951 the Mark III accelerator at Stanford became the first electron linac to exceed an energy of 100 MeV. Since then significant increases in maximum electron energy have been made by the h'Iark III (reaching an energy of 1 GeV in 1960) and SLAC (exceeding 2...

Medical Applications of Electron Linear Accelerators

The role of radiation therapy in cancer management is first defined: today among the cancer patients who are cured (≅ 45 %) about one half are cured by radiation therapy applied alone or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. The experience accumulated in decades shows that, to be efficient, the radiation treatment must be delivered with a high physical selectivity. At present, electron l...

High-Gain Free Electron Lasers Using Induction Linear Accelerators

High-power free electron lasers (FEL’s) can be realized using induction linear accelerators as the source of the electron beam. These accelerators are currently capable of producing intense cwrents (102-104 A) at moderately high energy (1-50 MeV). Experiments using a 500 A, 3.3 MeV beam have produced 80 MW of radiation at 34.6 GHz and are in good agreement with theoretical analysis. Future expe...
